Good bean yield brings smile on Rangpur dist growers' faces

RANGPUR, Nov 24: A good yield of bean has brought smile on the faces of growers across Rangpur district during the current season.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources bean has been cultivated on around 600 hectares of lands this year, which is about 100 hectares more than that of last year.

In Rangpur many areas including Nabdiganj at Pirgachha upazila, Changmari under Gangachara, Boiragiganj, Pairabond, Ranipukur under Mithapukur upazila, Ikorchali, Alampur of Taraganj upazila, and Keshobpur, Palichara area in Sadar upazila are known for plentiful bean and some other vegetables farming. 

Thousands of farmers in the areas are involved in the farming of different varieties of vegetables including bean on both their homesteads and other lands.

While visiting some areas including Ranipukur area of Mithapukur upazila and Palichara in sadar upazila on Saturday this FE correspondent found farmers taking care of their bean fields. Some were found harvesting their produce with delight.

Talking to this FE correspondent a number of growers said at the beginning of the season bean was sold at exorbitant prices in markets. Subsequently, the price declined with ample supply but its price is still satisfactory, they added.

Sohrab Mia, a bean cultivator of Rupshi village at Ranipukur union under Mithapukur upazila told FE that he has been cultivating bean on his land for the last few years and earning good profit. This year he has cultivated it on 25 decimals of land and is optimistic of earning at least Tk 50,000 as profit from its sale, he also said. At the beginning of harvesting per kg bean was sold at Tk 110 to Tk120 in markets while presently it is sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, he also said.

A good number of vegetable growers expressed their satisfaction over the financial benefit they get through the cultivation of bean besides cultivating other vegetables.

According to DAE sources cultivation of bean and some other vegetables is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit. The soil of many areas under the district is suitable for its farming as well. DAE also helps the growers by providing them necessary suggestions and agri- inputs. Early harvest ensures huge profit, sources added.
