Barguna farmers eye 60000 tonnes vegetable output

Farmers are now cultivating vegetables as it has changed their fate in six upazilas under Barguna district.

Farmers in different upazilas under the district have been producing different varieties of vegetables commercially for the last few years and many of them have already become financially solvent.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said, a total of 4,000 hectares land in six upazilas of the district were brought under vegetable farming this year with a production target of 60,000 tonnes, reports BSS.

Farmers are now producing different high-yielding varieties of vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkin, radish, eggplants,
bean etc using modern agro technology.

Kanai Sheel, a farmer of Kutubpur area at Sadar upazila, said he cultivated eggplants on two bighas of land in this season by spending Tk10,000 and earned Tk 40,000 by selling it. He also cultivated cabbage on one bigha of land and is expecting good return, he added.

Shahi Nur Azam Khan, DD of DAE said, after meeting the local demand different varieties of vegetables are being loaded for to Barisal and others parts of the division daily.
