THE holy month of Ramadan is only a month away and the commerce ministry must step up its efforts to ensure that prices of essentials remain under control. Every year during Ramadan, the prices of essentials reach exorbitant heights to untold miseries of common people. A group of unscrupulous traders resort to hoarding and creating artificial crisis of some essential kitchen items.
In the western world, prices of different items are reduced prior to big festivals. But in our country it is the other way round. The middle class and the lower income bracket people are the worst sufferers. It has been going on like this for decades. The government is only doing something to stem the rot to an extent, but the dishonest traders responsible for the unusual price hike during Ramadan remain at large.
