Although rain comes as a matter of great relief in this scorching summer heat, it also causes immense problem for the commuters. In a city like Dhaka, where public transport is painfully lacking and visibly unorganized, movement from one place to another during rain is doubly difficult. It is not helped either by the present condition of roads which are lying un-repaired for months together. To add insult to injury, there is the problem of inadequate water drainage as little rain causes water logging at places. Situation turns worse when we have heavy downpour. Many areas of the city go under knee deep water creating a lot of sufferings for the commuters. Life in city is paralyzed. The drainage system in the city is also neglected and is unable to hold wastes due to lack of maintenance. Indiscriminate use of polythene bags and reckless littering cause clogging of the drainage system completely and create water logging. Nowadays, many roads are dug up for different development works which are hardly completed on schedule making life more difficult for the city dwellers. I hope the concerned authorities will seriously look into the matter and undertake a coordinated work plan to solve these perennial problems.
