Pahela Baishakh and our hope

PAHELA Baishakh is the first day of the Bengali calendar. Last year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recognised one of the significant rituals of Pahela Baishakh - Mongol Shobhajatra as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". Arguably, Pahela Baishakh is the only time of the year when chapati, paratha, egg omelette and alu-bhaji are replaced by hilsha and panta bhaat for breakfast. Strident and colourful processions are not forced upon but have become a part of the celebrations.
People in this part of the world have been celebrating Pahela Baishakh since the rule of Mughal emperor Akbar and thus Mangal Shobhajatra owes its origin to the period of Akbar. Bangladeshis of all religions celebrate the Bengali New Year. Beside Bangladesh, New Year celebrations are also held in other Islamic countries like Iran.
Dhaka has a reputation of holding a good number of activities on this occasion. Therefore, the festive atmosphere might bring out the best in people so that they courteously play the role of perfect citizens and hence contribute to the welfare of the country. Shubho Noboborsho!
