No respite for Rohingyas

Published :

Updated :

Despite assurance from the Myanmar government we see no stopping of the fresh exodus of Rohingyas. Members of the minority group continue to stream towards Bangladesh fleeing from brutal and inhuman violence in Rakhine State. It is sad that the international community has failed to put pressure on the Myanmar government to stop torture on the Rohingyas. The newly arrived refugees alleged fresh torching of houses in the conflict-torn region. International media have shown video footages of villages burning and desperate people fleeing from inside Myanmar. The videos contradict the claim of Nobel Peace prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi that security forces had ended their operations on September 05. No one can deny that the origins of the Rohingya crisis are in Myanmar and that its solutions ultimately have to be in that country. I hope Bangladesh will strengthen its diplomatic endeavour and bring a peaceful solution to the humanitarian issue. China and India should use their influence to persuade Myanmar government to stop this brutal killing spree and torture.
