International Women\'s Day

THE world observed the International Women's Day on March 8 and Bangladesh was no exception. Bangladesh observed the day with due importance. We cannot hope for a progressive nation, keeping half of our population behind. There has been a growing awareness among our women over the centuries to claim equal rights from male-dominated society. Women are now marching ahead alongside men in every sector of society. They have come from behind in areas like, education, business, science and sports. They are making notable contributions in these areas as a result of which the growth rate of the country is increasing.
However, there are areas that need to be addressed to ensure women's progress. We have to eradicate the dowry system, child marriage; domestic violence and sexual harassment of women in the country. The age-old mindset that women are inferior to men, will have to be kicked aside. In our country, the literacy rate of women is still lower than men. We must ensure that women do not lag behind in education, as they can get true emancipation only through education.
