Fear of road casualties

Fear of road casualties

Against the backdrop of rising number of killings on roads we are all scared of road accidents. The frequency of road accidents and the extent of casualties thereof have really made us so.
A few years ago, Tareque and Mishuk were killed in a road accident at Ghior in Manikganj along with five other people. The issue of road accidents came under focus and was discussed in many seminars and workshops.
Road killings continue to be a headache when one has to travel by road. The first unwritten duty of anybody travelling by road is to inform the family or near and dear ones of his/her safe arrival. Almost all of us keep our fingers crossed till we receive a phone call regarding safe arrival of our relatives travelling by road. An editorial published in a local English daily a couple of days ago had drawn my attention along with many others where we saw a news item regarding 14 people getting killed and 61 injured in two days in only four districts.
We also know from the media that around 9,000 were killed and 22,000 injured in road accident in 2015 alone. It is also true that not all the accidents are covered by newspapers and TV channels.
I would therefore like to draw the attention of our Prime Minister, road transport minister and the concerned authorities to form a high powered committee to find out the causes of road accidents and take necessary measures immediately to reduce the number of road killings.
