Awareness campaign against smoking

Published :

Updated :

A voluntary organisation called Amra Dhumpan Nibaron Kori (Adhunik) created extensive public awareness against smoking in the eighties of the last century. The spirit and enthusiasm of the organisation appear to have died down. Although demand for cigarettes has fallen drastically and the Bangladesh Tobacco Company (BTC), the largest cigarette manufacturers of the country (now known as British American Tobacco) had to close down its factory at Chittagong, the number of smokers in the country is still formidable.
People aged over 50 mostly do not smoke cigarettes these days. Smoking cigarette is now mostly popular among members of the younger generation. If the concerned ministries launch an extensive awareness campaign against smoking, factories producing cigarette and bidi will go down further. A project by the Ministry of Health is particularly necessary to step up anti-smoking drive to bring down further the number of smokers in the country.
