CATARACT is a common eye problem for senior citizens. Some times young people are also affected with the problem. Phaco surgery is a modern cataract surgery in which the eye's internal lens is emulsified with an ultrasonic handpiece and aspirated from the eye. Aspirated fluids are replaced with irrigation of balanced salt solution to maintain the anterior chamber. Before the surgery can be performed, one or more incisions are made in the eye to allow the introduction of surgical instruments. The surgeon then removes the anterior face of the capsule that contains the lens inside the eye. An artificial lens is fixed on the affected eye to restore clear vision. The price of the lens charged on the patients is abnormally high at present and ranges from Tk.10,000 to Tk.1,00,000 and varies from hospital to hospital in Bangladesh. But the actual price of the lens in international market is between Tk.1,000 and Tk.5,000 depending on manufacturers. The Drug Administration should ensure a rational price of the lens in the country and the National Consumer Rights Directorate needs to come forward to rescue the patients from cut-throat price.
