CHATTOGRAM: The production of tea for January to October period in Chattogram zone has decreased this year compared to the same period of the last year.

Lack of irrigation, sunshine and corona outbreak in the current year are the prime causes for the decrease in the production of tea in Chattogram zone.

Of the 22 gardens in Chattogram, production has remarkably decreased in 12 gardens while production of rest 10 gardens has not decreased.

The 22 tea gardens of Chattogram produced 8.836 million kilograms (kgs) of tea from January to October in the current year which is 0.608 million kg less than the same period of last year.

The production of tea was 9.444 million kg from January to October last year. The production of tea has decreased by 6.44 per cent in the current year than the last year.

Jahangir Alam, president of Bangladesh Tea Association, Chattogram zone said, "The weather was not very good for tea production from January to October in the current year. Most of the time of the year, the sky was cloudy and the garden missed the sunshine even in August last. So, the production of tea has decreased in the current year than the last year."

He added, "Lack of rain and irrigation system hampered tea production this year. Moreover, pandemic also created an obstacle for maintaining and nursing the gardens. As a result, the production of tea in most of the gardens in Chattogram has decreased."
