Inefficiency and lack of financing and natural resources were found to be the obstacles to turning the country's ready-made garment (RMG) sector into green industry, according to a study.

In Bangladesh, the study said, lack of skills in information management and absence of long-term planning and awareness in the sector were also identified as obstacles.

The findings of the study were revealed in a workshop on 'developing capacity building framework for green industry in the RMG sector' organised by Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) at the Daily Star Centre in the capital on Thursday.

In the workshop, BKMEA said it conducted a 10-month study on its 58 member-factories under the AFD finance.

Besides, the study recommended imparting sufficient training, financing and patronising from the government and private level to overcome the challenges.

In addition, it stressed the need for capacity building and establishing 'green building council' in the country in line with international standards.

Commerce Secretary Subhasish Basu was present at the workshop as the chief guest while South Asian director for France-based NGO Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Nicolas Fornage as the special guest.

Mr Basu said the world is going towards green factories. "And a move for green factory is a must to meet the demand from foreign buyers and attract them to Bangladeshi products."

Mr Fornage said such study should be conducted to take Bangladeshi products to the apex level in the competitive world market.
