Non-stop fertiliser supply to come from Canada, says agri minister

Canada will continue supplying potassium fertiliser to Bangladesh, said Agriculture Minister Dr Muhamnad Abdur Razzaque on Thursday in the capital.

He said there was an uncertainty over supply of potassium fertiliser due to the outbreak of Russia-Ukraine war.

He added Bangladesh could not purchase potassium fertilisers from Belarus on account of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He said following efforts by the government, Canada provided Bangladesh with 0.5 million tonnes of potassium fertiliser that helped the country overcome the scarcity of the agri input during the robi crop season and the ongoing boro season.

The minister came up with the observations while talking to the media after a delegation led by Canadian high commissioner to Bangladesh Lilly Nicholls called on him at his ministry at Bangladesh Secretariat.

The delegation also included the representatives from Canadian Commercial Corporation now visiting Bangladesh.

Import of more lentil from Canada, cooperation on agriculture between the two countries and import of vegetables from Bangladesh came up for discussion at the meeting.

Mr Razzaque said the government has been providing subsidies on agriculture inputs like fertilisers, seeds and other agri inputs for the overall development of the country's agriculture sector.

Responding to a question, he said Bangladesh Nationalist Party failed to draw public support despite their movement over the past 14 years. He added BNP would not be able to create confusion among the people regarding the government's development activities.
