China's courier sector reports steady growth in September

China's courier sector posted steady growth momentum in September, according to an industry index.

The China express delivery development index came in at 222.4 last month, surging 23.7 per cent from the same period last year, said the State Post Bureau (SPB) in a report.

The country's courier sector saw faster expansion in September, with the related sub-index jumping 26.1 per cent year-on-year.

An estimated total of 5.69 billion parcels were delivered last month, the report showed. The reading was up 27 per cent year on year, equivalent to the annual total in 2012.

The sub-index for service quality climbed 23.4 per cent year on year to 312.1, while in key regions 74.3 per cent of parcels took no more than 72 hours to reach their destinations.

Express delivery development trend sub-index saw a 21.8 per cent year-on-year growth to 74, according to the report.

The volume of parcels delivered in October is expected to rise 27 per cent to nearly 6.0 billion, the SPB predicted.

The fourth quarter marks the peak season for courier business when huge demand of the express delivery market is expected to be released amid online sales promotion, said the report.

Compiled on the basis of data from China's major logistics firms operating delivery services, the index reflects the overall business activities and trends in the country's courier sector.
