Shakib first Bangladeshi to score over 400 runs in WC

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to aggregate 400 runs in an international series or tournament.

He reached the milestone during Thursday’s game against Australia, reports UNB.

With this innings, Shakib’s tally of runs reached 425, which is now the second highest individual total in this World Cup before today’s England v Sri Lanka game.

The southpaw started this World Cup hitting 75 against South Africa. Bangladesh won that match by 21 runs.

After a flying start, he scored 64 runs against New Zealand, but Bangladesh lost the game by two wickets.

In the next match against England, Shakib hit his first ton (121) in the world cups but Bangladesh lost that game too.

The all-rounder replicated his performance with bat once again against West Indies, striking a ton and becoming the second Bangladeshi player to hit a back-to-back centuries in the world cups after Mahmudullah Riyad.

With two centuries and two fifties, Shakib topped the list of most runs getter in the World Cup. David Warner took the spot from him with his brisk innings of 166 against the Tigers on June 20.

Shakib replied with 41, and along the way, completed 400 runs in this World Cup. He surpassed his former captain Habibul Bashar’s total of 379 scored in the Test series against Pakistan back in 2003.

Shakib also surpassed the record of Mahmudullah who scored 365 in the last World Cup which was the highest aggregated score in an ODI series or tournament by a Bangladeshi cricketer.

Bangladesh will play at least three more matches in this World Cup. So there is a big chance for Shakib to bring his tally to 500 and raise the bar for other Bangladeshi players.
