Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 in the first El Clasico of the season. David Alaba and Lucas Vasquez scored for Madrid and Kun Aguero got one back for Barcelona.

The match ended with Barcelona having only 2 shots on target and 52 per cent possession of the ball. Madrid came out of the fixture with 3 points sitting on top of the table.

Barcelona dominated the possession, with more shots but it is Real who came out on top in the first half. The half ended 1-0 in Real Madrid's favour. David Alaba scored the goal from a clinically executed counterattack.

Barcelona had clear-cut chances to go forward, one from a Sergino Dest miss and another from a header gone wide by Pique.

Ansu Fati came closest to equalising with a shot being blocked inside the 6-yard box in the dying minutes of the first half. The half was a case of Barcelona trying to unlock Real's defence and Real hitting them with pace on the counter.

Barcelona started the second half with more intent. With commanding possession over the ball, their attacks were more direct and divisive.

Ansu Fati once again came close to equalising in the opening few minutes of the half from a carefully measured pass from Jordi Alba.

Benzema missed an opportunity to make it 2-0 at the other end. The second half mirrored the first half with Barcelona ending the half with 51 per cent possession.

The game saw two yellow cards both coming in the second half. Mendy was booked for time-wasting while Pique got his name taken for an altercation with the referee.
