Ruling party Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman has said that some particular newspapers have started assassinating the character of Members of Parliament (MPs) afresh.
The lawmaker from Narayanganj said this while speaking at the parliament on Thursday.
He took the floor on a point of order in the House and said he submitted a notice before the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Privileges a year ago seeking the protection of the House as some newspapers hampered his privileges as an MP, assassinating his character.
The MP elected from Narayanganj-4 constituency said, "I did not get any result though one year has elapsed after I submitted a notice."
He also said, "The newspapers who wrote against us, particularly the newspaper or the group of newspapers that tried to create the one-eleven... they now started afresh assassinating character of MPs again."
According to him, 99 per cent of the country's journalists are honest while the remaining one percent of journalists is dishonest.
The dishonest journalists who took journalism to serve ill-purposes, they are now indirectly trying to create instability in the country, he said.
UNB said the MP sought to know about the fate of his notice.
In reply, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was in the chair at that time, said his notice along with several other notices from different MPs is now pending with the privilege committee and it will take decisions over the notices.
She said, "Your notice was accepted and notices from several MPs have been accepted as well. The notices are now pending with the privilege committee. We'll take measures over the notices."
"The committee, in the meantime, has received some more notices which are now under consideration. We will also inform decisions over the notices as well," the Speaker added.
