A police official has said they have reasons to suspect that Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death inside his dormitory.

“We have reasons to suspect that Abrar was beaten to death as we have found evidences in primary investigation,” Additional Police Commissioner of DMP Krishna Pada Roy told the reporters on Monday, reports BSS.

Abrar, 22, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering and a resident of BUET's Sher-E-Bangla Hall, was found dead in the stairway in the early hours of Monday.

He was called up from his room at 7:30pm on Sunday, said police, quoting the students of the hall.

Later, he was allegedly beaten to death and his body was found on the first-floor stairway of the hall at 2:00 am. His body was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue in the morning.

Abrar Fahad was from Raydanga village of Koya union under Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district. Abrar is the eldest son of Md Barkat Ullah, a private service holder and Rokeya Begum.

According to UNB, police detained nine leaders and activists of Chhatra League in connection with the killing.

The arrestees are: Buet unit Chhatra League (BCL) general secretary Mehedi Hasan Russel, its joint secretary general Mohtasim Fuad, Information and Research secretary Anik Sarkar, sports secretary Meftahul Islam, Rabin, Munna, Tanvirul Arefin, Amit Saha and Al Jami.

Among them, six are now in DB custody and the rest three are in the custody of Chawkbazar and Shahbagh police.

“We have begun scrutinising the CCTV footages and would watch all the video transcripts that were recorded in the cameras. No one would receive impunity regardless of what political parties they belong to,” said Krishna Pada Roy.

BSS report says, central leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League condemned the murder of Abrar and announced to take organisational steps if any BCL leaders’ involvement is found in the incident.

BCL's acting president Al-Nahean Khan Joy came up with the statement at a press conference at Modhur Canteen of Dhaka University on Monday.

The BCL also urged the law enforcement agencies to take necessary steps through a proper and neutral investigation.

They formed a two-member probe committee this noon and directed it to submit the report within the next 24 hours. The members of the probe committee are- BCL Vice-President Iyaz Al Riad and BCL Literature Secretary Asif Talukder.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said those who are involved in the murder of BUET student will face action.

“Whoever be the criminal, law will take its own course . . . you can’t just beat someone to death for having a different opinion,” he told reporters at his secretariat office here.

The authorities concerned are asked to take steps in this regard, he added.
