Global Covid-19 cases surpass 105 million

The global coronavirus (Covid-19) cases reached 105.7 million as of Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The total caseload reached 105,745,915 with 2,309,000 deaths, according to JHU tally.

Among the countries, the US remained the worst-hit with 26,914,925 cases and 462,138 deaths.

Amid the rapid screening in US, the virus is killing more than 3,000 Americans per day, reports UNB.

The US reports about 2 million tests per day, the vast majority of which are the slower, PCR variety. The initial tests developed to detect COVID-19 all used the cutting-edge technique, which quickly became the standard at US hospitals and labs. It also became the benchmark for accuracy at the FDA, which has greenlighted more than 230 PCR tests but only about a dozen rapid tests, reports AP.

More than 100,000 people in the United States have died of COVID-19 since January 1 this year as the country are ramping up vaccine rollout, according to the data, reports Xinhua.

The United States has more COVID-19 deaths than any other country in the world. The country has recorded nearly 26.9 million cases with over 461,700 related deaths as of Saturday afternoon, according to the real-time count kept by JHU.

The national ensemble forecast of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that the number of newly reported COVID-19 deaths will likely decrease over the next 4 weeks, with 11,300 to 22,600 new deaths likely reported in the week ending Feb. 27.

The national ensemble predicts that a total of 496,000 to 534,000 COVID-19 deaths will be reported by Feb. 27.

During the last 24 hours, 11,713 fresh positive cases were reported in India while 14,488 new recoveries and 95 deaths were registered. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 10,814,304 and the death toll rose to 154,918.

India began the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive on Jan. 16, with healthcare and frontline workers being vaccinated currently.

Brazil has registered 9,447,165 cases with 230,034 fatalities.

Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh reported eight new Covid-19 deaths until early Saturday, including five in Dhaka, taking the national tally to 8,190.

The mortality rate stood at 1.52 per cent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout.

Bangladesh had a daily infection rate of 2.51 per cent with 305 new cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 537,770.

On January 1, the daily infection rate was 8.18 per cent.

The overall infection rate stood at 14.39 per cent. However, 482,841 patients – 89.79 per cent – have recovered so far, the DGHS said.

Coronavirus Vaccination in Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched a Covid-19 vaccination drive at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on January 27.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque said seven million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine are now available in the country. He dubbed the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as the safest in the world.

For getting the jab, one needs to get registered at www.surokkha.gov.bd

For now, the vaccination program will be limited to five centers in the capital, and the nationwide inoculation will start in early February.
