AFTER 46 years of independence Bangladesh now makes ocean-going ships, cold rolled steel coil, assemble air cooler, fridge, motor bike and sedan, manufacture textile products and so on. Bangladesh is now moving towards rapid industrialisation. The ratio of the people below the poverty line is also reducing.
In next decade Bangladesh is expected to become a middle-income country. A lot of upcoming industries will need huge technical and professional manpower. Indeed, shortage of technical and professional manpower is going to be a major predicament for economic development.
Bangladesh needs to have an adequate number of technical personnel to cope with the problem. That is, in order to have the technical manpower we need to transform a large segment of our population into technical and professional manpower. The transformation process shall need a few years to materialize. People concerned are aware that a lot of industrial ventures in steel, dyeing and fisheries sectors are employing foreign technical hands at exorbitant wages.
The situation that India is now confronted with can be gathered from James Lamont's recent article in The Financial Express under syndicated service that 'India's industrialists are fighting a sharp rise in salary demands as they strive to hold on to scarce talent in the world's fastest growing large economy after China.'
Bangladesh may face the same situation in the next decade. A programme is therefore necessary to set up engineering institutes, at least one in each district, on a priority basis to impart technical education in different engineering schools and colleges
