Weekly kitchen market report: Eggs, green chilli, vegetables became pricier

Farm eggs, green chilli and some vegetables became pricier last week battering the consumers amid the pandemic.

However, beef and lentil prices showed a slight decline during the period while rice prices remained static at retail.

Farm egg prices increased to Tk 104-108 per dozen from Tk 94-96 last week

Green chilli prices shot up to Tk 150-180 a kg on Thursday from Tk 90-120 a kg a week back.

Water-logging in some key poultry hubs due to heavy rain and flood caused the hike in egg prices, said traders.

Flood also affected supply of vegetables and green chilli, said officials.

Mirajul Islam, an egg and chicken vendor at Rayer Bazar in the city said prices of egg had been fluctuating for the last two months.

He said that the recent price hike is caused by supply crunch from Sirajganj, Bagura and Tangail due to water-logging in those places.

Prices of egg have increased by Tk 0.9-1.2 per piece at Karwanbazar Rail Gate market in last three days, Mirajul added.

The price might rise further if the current situation persists, he said.

Price of chilli witnessed a gradual hike last week as more than 2,900 hectares of chilli fields were inundated in Jamalpur and Bogura districts, two key hubs, according to the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) and Department of Agricultural Extension(DAE).

Like chilli, vegetables including snake gourd, brinjal, pointed gourd, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, teasel gourd, eddo, papaya, long-yard bean, tomato, cucumber, witnessed Tk 10-30 a kg hike last week as sold at Tk 60-80 a kg.

Ladies' finger and papaya were cheapest veggies retailed at Tk 50-60 a kg on Thursday.

However, beef prices declined to Tk 570-600 a kg from Tk 580-600 a kg earlier.
