The prices of vegetables and green chilli increased notably in the city market in last few days, hitting the consumers' pockets.
Traders attributed the hike to the damage of crops caused by the last month's cyclone and ongoing rains in different places across the country.
Most of seasonal summer vegetables were sold at Tk 60-Tk 90 a kilogram on Saturday-a Tk 10-Tk 20 hike in a week.
Prices of snake gourd, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, teasel gourd, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, eddo and tomato etc went up further.
Bitter gourd was sold at Tk 70-Tk 90 a kg while snake, sponge and teasel gourd at Tk 60-Tk 70 a kg.
Okra was the cheapest veggie sold at Tk 40-Tk 50 per kg.
Green papaya, which is usually considered as a cheaper vegetable, was sold at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg.
Green chilli was retailed at Tk 120-Tk 140 a kg which was Tk 90-Tk 120 a kg earlier. Stored potato prices rose to Tk 28-Tk 32 a kg.
"Rain is causing disruption in supply putting impact on the vegetable market", said Helal Uddin Bhuiyan, a Rayer Bazar-based trader.
The cyclonic storm which hit Bangladesh last month also caused damage to crops in many districts, he said, adding that transport cost was two and half times higher due to the pandemic causing surge in prices.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), veggie on above 48,500 hectares of land and chilli on 4,700 hectares of land were affected by cyclone Amphan that hit parts of the country on May 20.
The Met Office in its 48-hour forecast said heavy to moderate rain might occur at most of places across the country.
