GPH to supply free oxygen to Covid-19 patients

CHATTOGRAM: With more than 2,900 new coronavirus cases recorded nationwide till the morning of April 28 and a majority of them needed immediate hospitalisation after detection, the demand for medical oxygen is continuing to rise notably.

Amid a fast-increasing demand for oxygen for medical use, some companies or institutes announcing to supply oxygen freely to Covid-19 patients in hospitals is a good news.

GPH, one of the renowned industrial groups in Bangladesh, will supply oxygen to hospitals freely for treatment of coronavirus-infected patients during the on-going second wave of the pandemic.

Talking with The Financial Express, Additional Managing Director Almas Shimul said, "GPH Air Separation Plant in Chattogram's Sitakunda is producing oxygen from air as a by-product of the plant's main production, including billet, rods, etc. We are producing 220 metric tonnes (MT) of gaseous oxygen and 22-25 MT liquid oxygen at this plant now."

"We are ready to help the hospitals by supplying the oxygen freely for the treatment of coronavirus-affected patients as the crisis is getting closer to a critical phase," he said.

He said they have observed the situation of India which is going through a severe oxygen crisis.

A large number of patients died in India for want of oxygen, he noted.

He said the GPH Air Separation Plant supplied oxygen to hospitals in Chattogram during the coronavirus outbreak.

"Now, we will supply adequate oxygen to hospitals, particularly in Chattogram, for treatment of patients during the current pandemic," he said.

The GPH Air Separation Plant supplied oxygen not only supplying oxygen to hospitals in Chattogram city area, but also upazila hospitals and those in rural areas, he mentioned.

"We use 150 MT oxygen for our production of steel and billets. We are supplying rest oxygen for the treatment of corona-affected patients through Spectra Oxygen Ltd and others," he stated.

Mr Shimul also said they have supplied 323,17,245 litres liquid oxygen through Spectra Ltd and 34,462 litres liquid oxygen through Islamia oxygen Ltd. Besides, 11756 litres of liquid oxygen have been supplied from March to December in 2020, he further noted.

"We have supplied oxygen to the Combined Military Hospital and Ma O Shishu Hospital in Chattogram last year. Apart from that, we supplied oxygen to upazila health complexes through then Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chattogram Md Ilias Hossain," he said, adding the GPH will continue to supply free medical oxygen to help the hospitals deal with a growing number of patients by extending proper medicare and treatment to them.

He concluded by assuring that the company would continue to work honestly and sincerely for the people of the country.
