BRAC launches support to returned migrant workers

BRAC has launched an emergency financial support of Tk 30 million for 7,250 returned migrant workers who are affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr Ahmed Munirus Saleheen, secretary of Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE), formally inaugurated the programme, at a virtual programmeon Thursday.

Each of the returned workers will get Tk 4,500 to Tk 5,000 through bkash. Some 1,545 workers have received money through bkash immediately after the launching event.

KAM Morshed, BRAC's senior director, said that since its inception, BRAC has been supporting people during every disaster in the country.

They have started working immediately after the spread of the virus in Bangladesh to help the government, he added.

As a part of the cooperation, they have started the financial assistance to migrant workers, impacted by coronavirus, he mentioned.

Shariful Islam Hasan, head of BRAC's migration programme, gave a keynote presentation and said the returned migrant workers are facing different types of difficulties at home. Many of them do not have the capacity to maintain their families.

"We have a large plan for livelihood supports to the workers in the post-Covid period," he said, adding that apart from this financial help, they have also provided psycho-social assistance to 2,500 workers and their families.

In his speech, the EWOE secretary said the overseas employment sector has been affected badly by the virus outbreak. Although the country's remittance earnings did not fall sharply still now, the trend is downward.
