'Bangladesh provides growth opportunities for Korean investors '

HSBC Bangladesh, in partnership with BIDA, BEZA, South Korean Embassy in Bangladesh and Bangladesh Embassy in South Korea organised a webinar themed ‘Bangladesh-Korea Business Corridor: Stakeholders Dialogue & Way Forward’, according to a press release.

The virtual event was hosted for Korean companies, stakeholders, as well as key policy stakeholders in a bid to support Korean businesses to explore emerging business opportunities in Bangladesh.

Chief guest, Salman Fazlur Rahman MP, private industry and investment adviser to the prime minister applauded HSBC for further stengthening the economic and business linkages between Bangladesh and Korea.

Salman said, “We hope and believe that Korea's technological superiority, vast industrial and infrastructural experiences, along with our sincere efforts, will create a winning combination that will prove to be beneficial for both countries. We hope and expect that world recognised iconic Korean companies will come forward to take the advantage of competitive and congenial investment climate of Bangladesh.”

Speaking at the event, Matthew Lobner, head of International and head of Strategy and Planning, Asia-Pacific for HSBC said, “We are thrilled to strengthen business ties between Korea and Bangladesh. Our international connectivity provides businesses access to a network covering more than 90 per cent of global GDP, trade and capital flows. We are proud to utilise this network to facilitate trade and investment into one of South-Asia’s most dynamic economies, and to support its continued development.”

Md Mahbub Ur Rahman, CEO HSBC Bangladesh moderated a panel discussion where Salman Fazlur Rahman MP, private industry and investment adviser to the prime minister, Lee Jang-keun, ambassador of Korea in Bangladesh, Abida Islam, ambassador of Bangladesh in Korea and Md Sirazul Islam, executive chairman of BIDA participated and discussed on the opportunities and challenges that needs to be addressed to attract more Korean business flow in Bangladesh.

Eun Young Jung, CEO, HSBC Korea, Kevin Green, country head of Wholesale Banking, HSBC Bangladesh and Major General Md Nazrul Islam, executive chairman, Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) also spoke on the occasion while Mr Ki-Hak Sung, chairman and CEO, Youngone Group and Ruhul Alam Al Mahbub, chairman of Fair Group also gave video message highlighting different aspects of this emerging business corridor.

Foreign direct investment from Korean companies has been a driver of Bangladesh’s prosperity and growth in recent years. Further upswing in investment is expected across a variety of sectors in the years ahead, with a particular focus on infrastructure, electronics and ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
