Right ways of skincare, guided by the expert

Skincare is not that hard if you know the right ways to do it. It is a sensitive job since doing it wrong can cause significant damage to your skin. The best way is to consult a specialist or follow their advice.

To provide the readers with crucial insights into skincare techniques, The Financial Express reached out to Dr. Manjot Marwah, hair transplant Consultant and Director at 'Dr. Manjot's Clinic,' an Internationally acclaimed Indian dermatologist with over a decade of experience in the field of skincare and dermatology.

She shared the way she took care of her skin and gave some suggestions regarding a skincare routine.

"Skincare is essential to keep our skin healthy. It also depends on your region or where you are staying, whether you are beside a beach or a cold place."

"Nowadays, the quality of products has improved, and medication is introduced into them. As a result, our skin is getting more benefits from medicated creams than plain moisturizers,' said Dr. Manjot.'

First, if a product or ingredient suits someone, it won't necessarily be suitable for your skin type and condition. So choose products according to your skin type.

According to Dr. Manjot, "I have a dehydrated skin type, and as I am around 40, my skin tends to age faster. To avoid this, I use certain ingredients that suit me well."

Cleanser:

"Cleaning of the face should be done twice a day. I use a  Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) based cleanser as this ingredient is a mild exfoliator than AHA and BHA.

"After cleaning properly, I use a microfiber towel to pat dry my face. Micro-fiber towels are soft and their bristles are not harsh for our skin and hair," she added.

Moisturizer:

Hyaluronic acid is a great ingredient for dry and dehydrating skin types. Hyaluronic acid maintains the hydration of our skin, and it is safe to use regularly. Using a moisturizer after a thorough cleansing is good for the skin.

Serum:

"I use the serum only before going to bed or nighttime skincare. According to my age, I use a peptide-based serum for its anti-aging property. Retinols make my skin drier; that's why I use peptides instead."

Retinol is a good ingredient for anti-aging and can be used daily if the composition is mild and lower.

Sunscreen:

Sunscreen should be chosen according to its blending ability on our skin and its thickness. If sunscreen gives a white cast, you should avoid using it. Dr. Manjot recommended using sunscreen only in the daytime, and it is not necessary to use it for using an electronic device as their UV radiation is not that strong.

She recommends using two finger amounts of sunscreen in 3 layers with 30 seconds of intervals for each layer. Avoiding sticky and greasy sunscreens is also advisable.

Exfoliation:

"I use sulfur or a clay mask which are cream based. These are good for deeply cleaning our pores. Clay and sulfur are mild exfoliants and suitable for dry skin types. I apply the mask to my face for 15 minutes and wash it afterward," Dr. Manjot added.

Dealing with acne:

For acne, Dr. Manjot recommends using clindamycin or benzoyl peroxide on the affected part. She uses this gel at night and leaves it for two hours maximum, as keeping it overnight can dry the area. The procedure has to be continued till the acne fades away.

People often go for products that are hyped or made popular by influencers. However, the best way is to go with your skin type, not following others' strategies.

"What people should do is to visit a dermatologist and get recommendations for some products with ingredients, beneficial and safe for their skin," she concluded.
