Life imprisonment means 30 years in jail: Supreme Court

A life imprisonment convict will have to serve 30 years in jail, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has said in a verdict.

But, in case of imprisonment until natural life, a convict will have to stay his or her entire life in jail, said a seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain in the verdict on Tuesday.

The verdict came upon a review petition filed by Ataur Mridha, a convict, with the highest court on the dispute over the tenure of life imprisonment on February 14, 2017.

Mohammad Shishir Manir, who is among the lawyers of the petitioner, expressed satisfaction over the verdict.

With this verdict, he told The FE, a long-standing dispute has been solved and it is very encouraging for the entire judiciary system.

Earlier, the Appellate Division received opinions from its four amicus curiae (friends of the court) to solve the dispute over the tenure of life imprisonment.
