HC summons ACC official for demanding bribe during investigation

The High Court has summoned Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation officer Md Alamgir Hossain to explain his position over an allegation of claiming unethical benefits during the investigation of a case.

The official has to appear before the court on November 7.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice S M Mozibur Rahman on Monday passed the order with a ruling after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

The court asked the ACC to adjourn the investigation against the writ petitioners till dispose of the ruling.

Advocate Md Kamal Hossain appeared in the hearing on behalf of the writ petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state, and Advocate Asif Hassan appeared for the ACC.

The ACC started an inquiry against a couple on a charge of amassing wealth beyond a known source of income and concealing information of assets. But an allegation was raised against ACC Assistant Director Md Alamgir Hossain that he tried to take unethical advantage while investigation.

Then the couple made a written representation to the ACC over the issue, but didn’t get any remedy. Finally, they moved to the High Court.

According to the case documents, the ACC issued a notice on March 3, 2019, against Md Abdul Quddus Hawlader, registrar of Pirojpur district, and his wife Mahinur Begum on the charge of amassing wealth beyond known source of income and concealing information of assets.

Since the appropriate response to the notice did not match the ACC filed a case against the couple on October 22 in 2020 with a Dhaka court. ACC Assistant Director Md Alamgir Hossain filed the case on charge of concealing information of Tk 2.47 million and amassing wealth of Tk 9.01 million beyond known source of income.
