The National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 has recommended the government should extend the ongoing lockdown for one more week to curb the surging virus infections in the country.

Scientifically, a lockdown of minimum two weeks is necessary for an effective outcome, reasoned the committee during its online meeting on Sunday night, according to a press release.

Moreover, it said, the lockdown should be extended considering the steady rise in infections and related deaths even during the restrictions.

Sample testing has come down recently, the committee noted, urging the government to increase it to stem the spread of the virus.

As a second wave of coronavirus infections broke out in Bangladesh, the government enforced a week’s lockdown until April 11 and then pausing for two days resumed it for another week that will continue until the midnight of April 21.
