A suspected leader of outlawed ‘Zulhas Bahini’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Dhalarchar in Bera upazila early Wednesday.

Zulhash Mandal was arrested at the New Market on Tuesday and handed over to Aminpur police in Pabna. Police took him on an overnight raid, said Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Rabiul Islam.

The 42-year-old belonged to the Purba Bangla Communist Party and led a terror gang in Pabna, Rajbari and Kushtia.

He was wanted in nine cases, with three of them for murders, said SP Rabiul.

The shootout took place around 2am Wednesday at Balaj Member Road in Dhalarchar.

“Police took Zulhash along to recover arms and nab his gang members. Police opened fire in self-defence. Zulhash suffered a gunshot as he tried to escape,” said the SP.

He was taken to the Bera Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Four police men also suffered injuries in the shootout.

One firearm and seven rounds of bullets were recovered from the scene, as per bdnews24.
