A 14-year-old girl has died a day after being set afire on Friday evening for allegedly stealing a mobile phone set at Khainput village under Shibpur upazila in Narsingdi.

Fifth standard schoolgirl Aziza, who was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital or DMCH’s Burn Unit in critical state, succumbed to injuries about 5am on Saturday, said Resident Doctor Partha Sankar Pal.

The girl had suffered burns on 94 per cent of her body. It requires them to perform tests to know whether she was burned, he said.

Quoting her father Abdus Sattar, Bachchu Miah, Sub-Inspector at DMCH Police Outpost, said Aziza’s aunt, Beauty Begum, had had some men to set her on fire after suspecting her of stealing her phone.

Officer-in-charge of Shibpur police station Syeduzzaman said they have not yet received any written complaint in this connection.
