Guava cultivation gaining popularity in Tangail

Guava cultivation is gaining popularity in recent time in Tangail district. The tasty summer fruit is now abundantly available in the local markets.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Tangail said guava grows well in Tangail for its favourable climate and soil condition. Farmers are also getting interested in cultivating the fruit as it is found profitable.

DAE Office also said growers of the district brought 907 hectares of land under guava cultivation in the current season with the production target of 7495 tonnes.

Various varieties of guava are being produced here like--- Kg, sharoop Khati, Thai-4, Thai -7 and Deshi. Among the varieties, Thai -4, Thai -7 and Kg is the best in taste and flavour.

Thai- 4, Thai-7 and Kg verities are pricier as they ar than the Deshi and Sharoop Khati in quality. At present Thai and Kg are selling in the local market at Tk 65 to 85 per kg.

Sub assistant engineer of DAE Tangail Md. Ruhul Amin also said due to prolonged flood situation weather was not favourable and it was apprehended that yield of guava would not be satisfactory.

But flood situation is gradually improving and yield will be satisfactory we hope he said. He also said the soil, climate and other factors of the district are suitable for guava cultivation.

Many poor and middle class farmers become self reliant by cultivating guava.

Mirzapur, Bhuapur, Shakhipur, and Modhupur upazila of the district are producing major portion of quality guava in the district, office sources said.
