The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) plans to create a database of every individual of the country to ensure better services of the citizenry.

For this, it has already initiated to create a 'national population register (NPR)' that would store some personal information of individuals.

Statistics and informatics division secretary Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury said this at the opening of a media consultation workshop on the BBS premises on Thursday.

BBS director general Mohammad Tajul Islam chaired the programme.

The state statistics body hosted the workshop for members of the Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB).

"We have to go for a real digital Bangladesh. For this, a personal database is very essential. The NPR will meet the requirement," said secretary Mr Chowdhury.

If the government endorses the BBS plan, he said, they would start work on the NPR shortly.

In a presentation, BBS joint secretary Dr Md Shahadat Hossain said they would collect personal information like name, parents' names, marital status, family members and property of every person.

The information would be updated every year, he added.

Meanwhile, BBS director Abdul Kader said they would go for rebasing the inflation calculation method.

"Currently, we apply the inflation calculation method taking fiscal year (FY) 2005-06 as the base year. It will be rebased to FY 2015-16," he cited.

"We will also expand collection spots of different goods for inflation calculation."

The statistician said department stores and super-shops would be added as price collection spots.

Press Information Department principal information officer Surath Kumar Sarkar, Bangladesh Betar deputy dirctor general ASM Zahid and DJFB president FHM Humayan Kabir also spoke.
