Stalking and sexual harassment of women

THE frequency of sexual harassments in the country is rising alarmingly. A recent report on women support and investigation reveals that women in our society are being sexually harassed at all stages of their life. According to the data, there were 93 incidents of rape during the last three months of the current year and the figure only includes incidents of crimes reported. I am sure the actual number will far exceed the reported number.
As there are many victims who fear being stigmatised by society and conceal facts from near and dear ones. This attitude encourages the wrongdoers.  We must not keep quiet under the situation and allow it to happen. We must rise to the occasion and make society safe for the girl children. Ironically, in our society, the victims are blamed for crimes inflicted upon them and not the offenders. Legal procedure involving criminal offences against women in our country is often lengthy. Many victims and their families do not like it that way and so they prefer to avoid it. It is therefore imperative that safety and honour for women must be ensured in the first place so that fundamental rights of women are established in society and their modesty safeguarded.
