The government has fixed minimum monthly wages with 5.0 per cent annual increment for workers in the country's security services sector.

This is for the first time the ministry of labour and employment announced such wages through issuing a gazette notification on June 06, more than two years after the wage board was formed in February 2018.

According to the gazette, a security guard in grade four from divisional city and city corporation areas will receive Tk 9,140 as minimum monthly wages while it would be TK 9,800 if he or she lives in the district and other areas.

The government has also for the first time incorporated a provision for an annual increment of 5.0 per cent of the basic pay.

The government has categorised workers and employees of the security service sector in four grades.

The government has fixed 50 per cent of the basic as house rent for workers located in divisional cities and city corporation areas while 40 per cent house rent for district and other cities.

The basic payment of a grade-four security guard has been fixed at Tk 5,600. A medical allowance of Tk I00 for all grades of workers has been fixed while Tk 400, and Tk 300 have been fixed as transport allowances for divisional and city corporation areas, and district and other areas respectively.

An apprentice would receive a total of Tk 7,000 as monthly wage. A worker's apprentice period would be three months and additional three months could be extended if his or her performance is not satisfactory.

The minimum monthly wages for a grade one worker has been fixed at Tk 14,000 and  Tk 13,060 for divisional and city corporation areas and district and other areas respectively with Tk 8,000 as basic pay. A grade one employee in divisional and city corporation areas and district and other areas will receive Tk 14,150 and 13,200 respectively as monthly minimum wage with Tk 8,500 as basic. The other allowances would be the same as the other workers.

According to the industry insiders, some 500 security service providers in the country are creating employment for about 0.35 to 0.4 million people.
