New building opens for NBR on Feb 4

The government is set to inaugurate the new 12-storey building of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) at the city's Agargoan on February 4.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the modern building built for the revenue authority spending Tk 4.12 billion, officials said.

The NBR is going to get a new establishment with all modern facilities after 50 years of its inception.

Already many of the units including Large Taxpayers Units (LTU) under VAT and the Income Tax wing of NBR started shifting to the new building.

Tax Appellate Tribunal already started its office on January 1, 2023 there.

NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem is expected to start the office in the new building from February 5, 2023.

All of the shifting is set to be completed by middle of February.

From March 1, 2023, the revenue board will fully start office in the new building of NBR.

Md Lutful Azeem, Project Director of NBR Bhaban and Tax Commissioner of Tax Zone-6, said construction of the building took less than that of its allocation.

It needed more than five years to complete after revised tender as contractors of the building including GK Shameem changed thrice, he said.

"Smart building should be used smartly. Maintenance of the building is important," he said.

People should own the modern building and use it in a prudent way, he added.

"We are moving forward with seven more infrastructure projects for NBR," he said.

New revenue buildings would be constructed in Chittagong, Rangpur, Sylhet, Barishal, Dinajpur, Chattogram, Noakhali, Brammanbaria, he said.

The government is also constructing a large Tax Academy on 20 acres of land, he added.

The proposal of tax academy already approved by planning commission and will be sent to ECNEC soon, he said.

Currently, the NBR building is situated in the city's Segunbagicha area, which is known as extension of the Bangladesh Secretariat. The building, ill-equipped to serve people, has a dilapidated escalator, congested conference room, insufficient washroom, and lack of other basic facilities for both visitors and revenue officials.

Central Intelligence Cell and research and statistics wings, Offices of appeal tribunal of VAT and customs, and director general of inspection would be relocated to the new building, officials said.

Each of the floors of the building has about 46,000 square feet space, which is the largest floor space among all buildings in Bangladesh.
