Exporters of used Japanese vehicles request Bangladesh to recognise and introduce JUMVEA (Japan Used Motor Vehicle Exporters Association) certificate aiming to check possible malpractices in the import of old cars.

Sources said the JUMVEA has recently pleaded with the Bangladesh embassy in Japan to send the appeal to the authorities concerned for steps regarding the issue.

"We have received the request and are scrutinising the issue," said a commerce ministry official.

An estimated 130 countries globally, including the USA, Russia and New Zealand, import used cars from Japan.

The JUMVEA has introduced a certificate that provides car-related information as per the request of different countries.

Many countries are using JUMVEA certificate as a source for detecting imported cars information.

It has recommended recognising and introducing certification at the import stage from Japan, which will help Bangladeshi car buyers and users get genuine information of respective cars.

This system will also prevent any type of malpractice at import stage, according to the association.

The JUMVEA hopes that the Bangladesh authorities will recognise and accept its certificate very soon.

The association is recognised by the Japanese government and accredited as a corporation by economy, trade and industry ministry of Japan in 1997.
