DSEX falls below 6,300-mark

Stocks slipped into the red on Sunday, snapping the previous two days gaining streak, as some risk-averse investors opted for booking profits on sector-wise stocks.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, also hit one-month low and total turnover on the major bourse amounted to Tk 5.74 billion, which was 7.42 per cent lower than the previous day’s Tk 6.20 billion.

Analysts said investors were mostly inactive and not confident enough to put in fresh funds, plunging the market turnover to nearly one-month low since November 5, when the turnover was recorded at Tk 5.38 billion.

The market started with a positive note and the key index of the major bourse rose nearly 24 points within first 20 minutes of trading, but the rest of the session went down steadily, finally ending more than 10 points lower.

DSEX, prime index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 6,296, after losing 10.66 points, or 0.16 per cent, over the previous day.

However, two other indices of the premier bourse managed to close in the green zone.

Of those, DS30, comprising blue chips, also advanced 3.83 points, or 0.16 per cent, to close at 2,274, and Shariah index DSES gained 1.26 points, or 0.09 per cent, to finish at 1,383.

The losers took a marginal lead over the gainers as out of 328 issues traded, 152 closed lower, 131 higher and 45 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

BD Thai Aluminium topped the turnover chart with 9.66 million shares of nearly Tk 306 million changing hands, followed by Brac Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank, LankaBangla Finance and AB Bank.

Eastern Cables was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 7.51 per cent while Central Pharmaceuticals was the day’s worst loser, plunging by 11.15 per cent.

Port city bourse CSE closed lower with its All Shares Price Index (CAPSI) -- CAPSI-- losing 21 points to close at 19,488 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –  falling 13 points to finish at 11,790.

The losers here too beat the gainers as 107 issues closed lower, 93 higher and 41 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 7.61 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 227 million in turnover.
