Beximco leads turnover chart for second straight year

The Bangladesh Export Import Company or Beximco, the flagship company of Beximco Group, topped the turnover chart of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) for a second straight year in 2022 while ten most-traded stocks accounted for 27 per cent transactions on the prime bourse.

The annual turnover amounted to Tk 2,344 billion in the outgoing year on the Dhaka bourse as the stock market saw 244 trading days.

The average daily turnover stood at Tk 9.61 billion. It was the third-highest daily average turnover in the stock market history. The highest and second-highest figures are Tk 16.44 billion in 2010 and Tk 14.75 billion in 2021, according to DSE data.

This year's ten most-traded companies accounted for 27 per cent of transactions on the DSE.

According to DSE data, the Beximco generated about Tk 164 billion in turnover, accounting for 7.0 per cent of the year's total turnover.

In 2021, Beximco also dominated the turnover list, generating a record turnover of Tk 300 billion amid huge buying and selling shares of the company's shares.

Its share lost 22 per cent in the year to close at Tk 115.60 on Thursday, the last trading day of the year although its share has been stuck at floor price -Tk 115.60 since November 6.

Beximco has reported a net profit of Tk 12.55 billion for the year ending on June 30, 2022, registering an increase of a whopping 91 per cent driven by a wide range of business portfolio, including a significant growth in the textile division.

The flagship platform now has operations and investments across a wide range of industries including textiles, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, real estate development.

The group sells its products and services in the domestic market as well as in international markets. Yellow is one of the leading retail fashion clothing brands owned by Beximco.

Beximco, listed on the Dhaka bourse in 1989, declared 30 per cent cash dividend in 2022. In 2021, it provided 35 per cent cash dividend.

Orion Pharma came second on the yearly turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 98.36 billion changing hands during the year. The drug maker's share price dropped 9.22 per cent year-on-year to close at Tk 82.70 on Thursday.

Bangladesh Shipping Corporation clinched the third spot, with shares worth Tk 70 billion changing hands in 2022. The state-run corporation's share jumped 60 per cent over the previous year to close at Tk 115.30.

Fortune Shoes emerged as fourth, with shares worth Tk 58 billion changing hands during the year. The shoe maker's share plunged 18 per cent to close at Tk 75.70 on Thursday.

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh notched the fifth spot, with shares worth Tk 42 billion changing hands during the year. The multinational cement maker's share price dropped 8.86 per cent to close at Tk 64.80 on Thursday, the last session of the year.

Turnover of Sonali Paper & Board Mills was Tk 40 billion. The company's share price slumped 36 per cent to close at Tk 615.10 on Thursday.

Genex Infosys featured a turnover of Tk 39.60 billion. Its share closed at Tk 81, losing 51 per cent over the previous year.

The turnover of IPDC Finance was Tk 38.72 billion. The company's share price soared 50 per cent to close at Tk 57.60 on Thursday.

JMI Hospital Requisite Manufacturing featured a turnover of Tk 38 billion. The company's share closed at Tk 73.40, surging 234 per cent during the year. The company made debut trading in March this year.

Eastern Housing also made its way to the year's top turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 35 billion changing hands during the year. The real estate company's share price soared 70 per cent to close at Tk 78.90 on Thursday, the last trading day of the year.
