Water transport workers start countrywide indefinite strike

FE ONLINE REPORT | Tuesday, 20 October 2020

Water transport workers have started a countrywide indefinite strike to press home their 11-point demand.

They began their strike from Monday midnight, Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation (BWTWF) General Secretary Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam told the FE.

The BWTWF and Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union jointly called the strike.

“We will continue strikes until our demand fulfils”, he says, adding passenger-carrying transport workers, however, have not taken part in the strike due to Durga Puja.

On Monday, we had a meeting with the authorities concerned but they did not accept our demands, Alam insists.

Our demands include appointment letters for the workers, health care equipment, food allowance, and appropriate measures to end extortion on the waterways, he added.
