Rangpur farmers show more interest in lemon farming

RANGPUR, Sept 13: The farmers of Rangpur division are showing more interest in commercial cultivation of lemon due to handsome profit.
Earlier, most of the farmers of the region cultivated lemon on limited basis. But the scenario has changed now as in recent years the farmers are cultivating the popular sour fruit commercially.
Thousands of farmers under Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and other districts of the division are involved in the farming of different varieties of lemon including Kagzi, Pati Kagzi and Zamir varieties on both their homesteads and other lands.
Its cultivation process is easier as it does not require much fertilisers or frequent use of pesticides, Farmers alleged.
Ashraful, farmer of Mominpur area of Rangpur Sadar upazila said that he has been cultivating lemon on his 40 decimals of land for the last few years and earning satisfactory profit. This year he has already earned Tk 15,000 from its sale. He is optimistic of achieving more profit.
Sources said though most of the growers have been farming lemon in their homesteads, many of the farmers have now cultivated lemon as live fences around their crop fields also to save their crops from the harms of domestic animals to earn additional profits, sources added.
A good number of lemon growers expressed their satisfaction over the financial benefit they get by farming it besides cultivating other crops.
According to DAE, Rangpur sources commercial cultivation of lemon is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit. The soil of many areas under the region is also suitable for its farming. DAE also helps the grower by providing them necessary suggestions and agri- inputs.
