First-ever minimum monthly wages for security service sector fixed

Security guard to get Tk 9,140 monthly with 5.0pc annual increment

The government has fixed minimum monthly wages first time for the workers of the country’s security service sector with introducing five per cent annual increment.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment issued a gazette notification in this regard on June 06, more than two years after the wage board was formed to fix the wages in February 2018.

According to the gazette, a security guard in grade four from divisional city and city corporation area will receive Tk 9,140 as minimum monthly wages while the minimum monthly wages would be TK 9,800 if he or she lives in district and other areas.

The government has also for the first time incorporated a provision for an annual increment of 5.0 per cent of the basic pay.

The government has categorised workers and employees of the security service sector in four grades.

According to the gazette, the government has fixed 50 per cent of the basic as house rent for workers located in divisional cities and city corporation areas and 40 per cent as house rent for district and other cities.

The basic payment of a grade four security guard has been fixed at Tk 5,600. 

A medical allowance of Tk 100 for all grades of workers has been fixed while Tk 400 and Tk 300 have been fixed as transport allowances for divisional and city corporation areas and district and other areas respectively.

An apprentice would receive a total of Tk 7,000 as monthly wage. A worker's apprentice period would be three months and additional three months could be extended if his or her performance is not satisfactory.

The minimum monthly wages for a grade one worker has been fixed at Tk 14,000 and Tk 13,060 for divisional and city corporation areas and district and other areas respectively with Tk 8,000 as basic pay.

A grade one employee in divisional and city corporation areas and district and other areas will receive Tk 14,150 and 13,200 respectively as monthly minimum wage with Tk 8500 as basic.

The other allowances would be same as the other workers.

According to industry insiders, there are some 500 security service providers in the country and creating employment for about 0.35 to 0.4 million people.
