Bountiful yield delights Rangpur radish cultivators this season

RANGPUR, Nov 09: The radish growers of different areas in Rangpur district are delighted as they are getting bountiful production this season.

According to sources harvesting of the early variety of radish is going on in full swing across the region and the growers are earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets. 

Due to easy cultivation process, low production cost and good profit farming of   radish is on the increase across the region.

Thousands of peasants in the areas are involved in the farming of different varieties of vegetables including radish.

Hakim Mia, a farmer of Damdama village at Pairaband union in Mithapukur upazila told this correspondent that he has cultivated radish on 45 decimals of land and already earned Tk 17,000 from its sale. He is optimistic of achieving more profit.

Tota Mia another farmer of Paschim Mandrain village of Gangachara upazila said that they prefer vegetable farming as it is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy and some other crops. Harvesting of radish can be started within 40 days after sowing seeds, he added.

Traders from Dhaka and some other districts are coming to the region everyday to buy fresh vegetables including radish, sources said.

Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of radish. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year, said Abu Raihan, a wholesaler at Rangpur city Bazar.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the farming of radish and some other winter vegetables is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit. DAE also helps the growers by providing them necessary suggestions and agri- inputs. Early harvest ensures a good profit, sources added.
