BNP forms relief committee to assist flood victims

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed on Saturday a relief committee to assist the flood-affected people of the country.

Standing committee member of the party Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku was made convenor of the committee.

The party formed the committee at a virtual standing committee meeting on Saturday afternoon in the capital. Acting chairman of the party Tareque Rahman presided over the meeting.

The meeting expressed grave concern over the deteriorating trend of the present flood situation in 21 districts.

Standing committee members of the party Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamiruddin Sarcar, Mira Abbas, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Begum Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, were present, among others.

The meeting observed that India has opened all sluice gates and barages of all common rivers that has resulted in overflowing of Brahmaputra, Mahananda, Jamuna, Meghna, Teesta, Dharla rivers and their waters flowing above danger levels and caused floods in the country's northern, eastern and central parts of the country.

It said that flood-affected people have been passing a miserable life as the government is not paying proper attention to them.

They said that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has aggravated the sufferings of the flood affected people.

At the meeting, the BNP leaders and activists of all levels were urged to stand by the flood-affected people.

The BNP relief committee will start its activities soon, according to a statement issued by the party on Sunday.
