Bangladesh reports 4,846 new COVID cases, 76 deaths in a day

Bangladesh has registered 4,846 new coronavirus cases, raising the country’s total caseload to 861,150.
Another 76 people died of the virus in the 24 hours to 8 am on Tuesday, taking the total death toll to 13,702, according to the latest virus data released by the government, reports bdnews24.com.
Dhaka saw a surge in new cases, tallying 1,967 over the period, the most among the eight divisions. Khulna, a recent virus hotspot, saw 998 new cases, while Rajshahi registered 763.
Khulna reported the most deaths, with 27, while Dhaka and Rajshahi saw 14 each, and Chattogram 10.
Another 2,903 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 788,385.
As many as 25,028 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 19.36 per cent.
The latest figures put the recovery rate at 91.55 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.59 per cent.
Globally, over 178.81 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 3.87 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
