Verdict on five Netrokona 'war criminals' Thursday

The court is to issue the verdict in the case over 1971 war crimes in Netrokona’s Purbadhala on Thursday.

The five fugitives accused in the case are- Sheikh Md Abdul Majid aka Majid Maulana, 66, Md Abdul Khalek Talukdar, 67, Md Kabir Khan, 70, Abdus Salam Beg, 68 and Nuruddin, 70.

They are accused of participating in seven incidents that involved of murder, rape, kidnapping, torture, looting and other atrocities during Bangladesh’s Liberation War, reports bdnews24.com.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) bench led by Justice Shahinur Islam set the date for the verdict on Wednesday.

Prosecutors Mokhlesur Rahman Badal and Sabina Yasmin Manni represented the state in the case. State assigned defence lawyer Gazi MH Tamim represented the five absconding suspects in the case.

Sabina Yasmin Manni said that investigation officials had initially submitted reports accusing seven suspects in the case. But suspect Ahammed Ali, 78, died in prison before he was indicted and another suspect, 70-year-old Abdur Rahman, died during the trial.

“As a result, proceedings have only concluded in the case against the five fugitives. The court has set a date today. The verdict will be announced tomorrow.”
