US-Bangla to get $4.2m from Sadharan Bima as compensation

The US-Bangla Airlines will get $4.2 million (Tk 346 million) initially from state-owned insurance company Sadharan Bima Corporation as compensation.

The insurance company is providing the compensation for the airlines as its aircraft crashed in Nepal more than two weeks ago.

Sadharan Bima Managing Director Syed Shahriyar Ahsan said they will pay the compensation to the airlines after collecting the fund from overseas insurance firms.

“The fund will be paid as an instant relief so that they can tackle the situation for the time being. We have arranged the fund directly from the insurers to pay the compensation,” he said.

Ahsan also pledged that more compensation will be paid in phases.

According to bdnews24.com, Sadharan Bima earlier said the families of the dead will get $200,000 each and US-Bangla Airlines may get $7 million in compensations.

The US-Bangla plane crashed in Kathmandu with 71 passengers on board. Fifty people, including four crew members, died.

Among the Bangladeshis, the death toll climbed to 27, with the latest casualty reported on Monday.

Immediately after Bangladesh’s worst aviation disaster, compensation to the victims’ families came into the discussion.

After the plane crash, Civil Aviation Authority Chairman M Nayeem Hasan said: “Generally, there are two kinds of insurance. One is for planes and the other is for passengers.”

About compensations for the victims, he said, “After an investigation, we can say how much compensation will be paid for the dead and the injured. The investigation is ongoing.”

On Saturday, US-Bangla spokesman Kamrul Islam said that they had informed insurers about the incident. “Now the ball is in their court.”
