Farmers are passing a busy time in preparing Boro seedbeds, particularly in the low-lying areas of Gopalganj this season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) expects 90 tonnes of High Yielding Variety (HYV) to be grown on 3,600 hectares of land in the district.

More than 60 per cent seedbeds have already been prepared and the rest will be completed by December, according to sources.

Owing to the distribution of high quality seeds at a cheaper rate from Agricultural organisations, many farmers are optimistic about getting a satisfactory yield of the crops this season.

DAE sources said this year’s target of rice production has been fixed at nearly 3,67,500 tonnes on 73,500 hectares of land.

Rang Miah (52), a farmer of Ragunathpur village of the district told the FE he purchased Hybrid seed SL-8-H at taka 360 per kg from local market and its production is more lucrative than those of other hybrid ones.

The price of this hybrid seed has shot up recently, he added.

Not only that, all kinds of hybrid seeds are being sold above Tk 20 to 30 per kg compared to the actual rate in local market.
