Ostrich rearing gaining momentum at Sonatola

Commercial ostrich farming is gaining momentum in Sonatola upzila of the district.

A good number of people have already started getting benefit from the bird.

"I have taken an initiative to rear the bird on commercial basis on my ten bighas of land in February last. I have spent over Tk 1,20,000 to set up the farm.," said Atikur Rahman of Halidaboga village under Jorgachha union in Sonatola upazila.

"The birds are growing well in my farm", he added.

Fatematuj Jahura, a retired schoolteacher of the area, has been rearing some ostriches for the last two years. She said, "Rearing the tallest and heaviest birds is my hobby. It is also a source of earning."

A farmer can grow 10 to 15 ostriches in a bigha of land. To grow 15 ostriches, a rearer needs to spend around Tk 80,000 to Tk 90,000. If it can be grown well reares would be able to make a handsome profit from it, sources said.

District livestock officer Shafiuzzaman said, "We will provide all sort of support from our department if the farm owners seek any help."
