BOGURA, Mar 09: Thousand of landless farmers in the district are in great difficulties as the Nagore river has lost its navigability.

The river originates from the Karatoa (Nilphamari) river flowing from Shibganj, Dupchanchia and Nandigram  upazilas of Bogura district and flows through the Singra upazila  of Natore and is connected with the Atrai river stream in Naogaon.

The river is on the verge of extinction due to cutting of the soil from the river and lifting sand mercilessly. It has become a dead canal now.

Natural beauty is being lost. No one has headache about it.

The fishermen used to fish throughout the year. But now the fish in the river is distant, there is no water. There is river but no waves. For many days the boat did not go up and down the river.

The size of the river is getting smaller.

Anukul Barmon at Nagorkandi village under Nandigram upazila demands digging of the Nagar river.

Some fishermen said earlier different fishes could be found in the river. They used to sell the fish and make a living. Now the fish is not available due to lack of water.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Mahbubur Rahman said the river needs to be dug up. A project has been sent to restore the navigability of the river. If the project is implemented, the river will regain its earlier status.

Deputy Commissioner Foyez Ahmmad said it will be possible to continue irrigation facilities by taking necessary steps for proper management and maintenance of water.
